Program Introduction
Shanghai Maritime University originated from the Shipping Section of Shanghai Industrial College (Nanyang College) founded in 1909 toward the end of the Qing Dynasty by Ministry of Posts and Communications. In 1912 the Shipping Section became Wusong Mercantile Shipping School, and in 1933 was renamed Wusong Mercantile Shipping College. In 1959, it became Shanghai Shipping College under the leadership of China’s Ministry of Transport. In 2004, with permission from China’s Ministry of Education, it was renamed Shanghai Maritime University. Our university enjoys a history of over one century.
SMU, a pioneer of EMBA education in China, was one of the first 30 institutions authorized to offer EMBA education by the Ministry of Education in 2002. With its unique academic strength in shipping, logistics, supply chain and waterfront industries, its superb international exchange and cooperation platform, and its quality curriculum and outstanding teaching staff, the university has established itself as a unique and distinguished EMBA education brand. With over a thousand senior management personnel for governments and businesses trained by our university, we are now recognized as the Huangpu Military Academy for China’s shipping sector.
In 2013, in order to facilitate the development of Shanghai as a foremost international shipping center, under the auspices of Ministry of Transport and Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai Advanced Institute of International Shipping was born as the dedicated EMBA education branch of SMU and the only shipping EMBA education base in China.

Shippingand logistics enterprises and organizations in China and the Asia-Pacific region, to enable them to fully master the theory of modern enterprise management and decision-making methods and deeply understand the business modes of the enterprises at home and abroad, and be equipped with the capacity of formulating enterprise development strategy, making daily operation and management decisions and participating in the global competition in the complicated domestic and international context. At present, such disciplines as general type, shipping finance, logistics in Free Trade Zone, supply chain+ and port management and port industries etc. are available.
General EMBA
An EMBA program for senior executive personnel with higher education degrees, senior management experience and good development potential, to provide trainees with basic business administration theories and methods, to nurture the skills of strategic analysis and creative problem solving in them, so as to scientifically and artfully facilitate the integration of company resources, market factors and corporate culture into corporate goals for the purpose of strengthening the core competence of the business.
Shipping Finance EMBA
An EMBA program that leverages the broad development prospective for shipping finance thanks to reform and opening up, adapts to meet demands by globalization and upgrading and adjustment of the shipping industry, and aims to cultivate leaders for the shipping finance and logistics communities.
Free-Trade Zone Logistics EMBA
An EMBA program that leverages the latest trends in global economy, shipping and free-trade zone development, focuses on fields such as shipping, policies, regulations and information that are closely linked to free trade zone logistics, and seeks to build a highland and exchange platform for elite professionals in the field of free-trade zone logistics.
Supply Chain + EMBA
An EMBA program that leverages the huge development potential for supply chain and logistics industries brought on by the fast-growing Chinese economy, fulfils the demand of economic globalization and the upgrading and adjustment of supply chain industrial structure. Besides mastery of basic theories for supply chain and logistics, our trainees are also expected to hone in on decision-making skills in real work situations. The program seeks to serve as an incubator for industry leaders.
Port Management and Waterfront Industries EMBA
An EMBA program that provides training in strategic development, business planning and collection and distribution system management for port and hinterland economic belts to middle and senior management personnel in the field of port production management and waterfront industries. The trainees are taught business administration methods for solving problems creatively and foresightedly.
