From December 5 to December 7, professor Martin Christopher from British Cranfield University School of Management, gave the lecture Supply Chain Management for the EMBA students in Shanghai Advanced Institute of International Shipping.

Professor Martin held the view that the new market competition is low cost competition, low cost can be implemented by means of effective supply chain management. Supply chain management is aimed at managing the relationships between the upstream suppliers and downstream customers to create a higher value with less overall logistics cost in the terminal market. He said since market demand is difficult to predict, an agile supply chain must be created and the key is the balance of supply and demand. In the lecture, the students were actively involved in case discussion under the guidance of professor Martin.

Owing to professor Martin’s outstanding achievements and his popularity in the field, not only many alumni of Shanghai Maritime University but also Fritz Hire Augustus Pinnock, the famous international shipping expert and the dean of Maritime Institute in Jamaica attended the lecture. Professor Martin’s lecture was beyond all praises.

Professor Martin Christopher is the chairman of Logistics and Transportation Research Center of British Cranfield University, which is the biggest logistics research institution in Europe. Professor Martin has enjoyed high reputation in the field of logistics and supply chain management. In 1988, he won the Robert Lawrence Award. In 2005, he won Outstanding Contribution awarded by American Supply Chain Management Association. In 2007, he was appointed as the professor of Purchasing and Supply Research Foundation of British Chartered Institute. In 2008, he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by this institute.
